Stage 1 planning approval granted for new Tweed Valley Hospital

Following extensive community and government agency consultation on the Tweed Valley Hospital, the project’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), the overall hospital concept, and consent to undertake early works on the site, has been approved.

Tweed Valley Skills Centre

An exciting joint initiative between TAFE NSW and the Tweed Valley Hospital project for the new ‘Tweed Valley Skills Centrehas been announced by the Minister responsible for TAFE NSW, Adam Marshall, with Member for Tweed, Geoff Provest.

The initiative demonstrates the long-term benefits of the new hosptial's location immediately adjacent to the TAFE NSW Kingscliff campus.

A Prototype and Simulation Suite, in addition to a Skills and Employment Hub, will see the new Tweed Valley Skills Centre provide education, training, and employment opportunities for the local community and ensure that the benefits of the new hospital extend beyond the delivery of new hospital buildings.

Extensive investigations confirm no EPBC referral required for hospital project


Extensive investigations conducted by independent experts are categoric that there will be no significant impact on matters of national environmental significance from development of the Tweed Valley Hospital or the essential environmental protection works currently underway on the site.

There is therefore no basis or requirement to refer the project to the Commonwealth under Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act 1999.

Sediment control on the Tweed Valley Hospital site


Site contamination investigations conducted by independent experts in 2018 identified some small areas of pre-existing surface contamination on the Tweed Valley Hospital site.

These areas have been temporarily capped and securely fenced off from the rest of the site to make them safe and the work site has been inspected by an independent environmental consultant.

Remediation Action Plans have also been developed for these areas and this work will be carried out under strict controls and independently audited following approval of the State Significant Development application.

Safety-related concerns raised by CFMEU addressed


The principal contractor currently in control of the Tweed Valley Hospital site, Woollam Constructions, notified Health Infrastructure on the 16 January 2019 that the CFMEU (Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union) had raised safety-related concerns around the generator serving the site amenities.

Woollam Constructions have confirmed that all matters raised by the CFMEU at the site visit on the16 January were immediately reviewed and have been appropriately addressed. The essential environmental protection works currently underway on the site are continuing.

The Tweed Valley Hospital project has taken another step forward, with Lendlease Building appointed to progress the next stage of planning and design, and subject to planning approvals undertake early works for the new hospital.
The announcement marks the latest milestone in the delivery of the brand-new state-of-the-art major referral hospital for the people of the Tweed-Byron region.

Community exhibition period extended for SEPP and EIS

The public exhibition period for the Tweed Valley Hospital Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and the site specific State Environment Planning Policy (SEPP) has been extended to 13 December 2018 to ensure that all members of the community are able to have their say during this significant milestone in the project process.

The Department of Planning and Environment extended the exhibition period for an additional two weeks.

Tweed Valley Hospital site now acquired

Another major milestone in the delivery of the brand new state-of-the-art Tweed Valley Hospital has occurred, with ownership of the site opposite Kingscliff TAFE transferred to the NSW Government on 2 November 2018. Preliminary site works have commenced with the immediate taks being to ensure appropriate environmental control measures are in place.

Lodgement of Environmental Impact Statement marks progress

Lodgement of Environmental Impact Statement marks progress

A further milestone in the Tweed Valley Hospital planning process has now been achieved with the lodgement today of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Stage 1 State Significant Development (SSD) planning application.

The EIS is the first of two SSD planning submissions for the project, and seeks an overall approval for the hospital concept and consent to commence early and enabling works on the site.

Major tender released for design and construction

A major milestone in the delivery of the Tweed Valley Hospital occurred on 12 October with the release of the major tender seeking early contractor involvement in the planning, design and delivery of the new hospital.

NSW Health are seeking very early input to the design of the new hospital from the successful contractor. This will allow the experience and innovative ideas from the building sector to work together with Health Infrastructure, Northern NSW Local Health District and the community to ensure every step, from the design to the commissioning of the hospital, reflects best-practice.
